Why On Earth Are Winters Getting Worse If the Planet Is Getting Warmer

Secondary

Description

Part of the PBS series, Weathered, this video explores why there seems to be an increasing number of severe winter storms happening in a world that is warming due to climate change. To help students understand this paradox, experts explain the phenomenon of arctic amplification, its disruption of the jet stream, and resulting changes to the polar vortex that create the conditions for  more intense winter storms in certain latitudes and locations.

With extreme cold being a major cause of weather-related deaths and the fact that many places now being effected have little experience with extreme winter weather, attention is given to how to prepare for these types of storms and limit their damage and disruption.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The video's detailed explanation of the paradox of colder weather happening in a warming world will support the study of climate change and weather in science, environmental science and geography at the secondary level.
