Elementary

Description

"Squirrels" is an easy-to-use resource that helps introduce students to animal behavior and the skills need for making wildlife observations. Through the activities included, the students are introduced to the terms of "caching" and "cache".

In the preliminary activity, students play a game of "Squirrel Says" during which they mimic squirrel behavior.  This game is followed by "Cache and Seek"  that has students choose an item from nature to hide somewhere in a designated area.  The following day, the students will test their memory and retrieve the item. 

The third activity is an observation-based activity in which the students record observations on a provided worksheet. Upon their return to class, they will share findings and compile a list of common behaviors to discuss.

For the final activity, students write a description of the life of a backyard squirrel from the squirrel's perspective.
