Schoolyard Bird Blitz

Secondary, Middle

Description

Bird Blitz is an engaging outdoor activity where students across Canada join together each May to count and identify local birds. Once that task is done, they share their findings through an online portal. The best part is that their observations help scientists monitor Canada's birds!

Bird monitoring programs can connect students with the natural world, help them gain important scientific monitoring skills, and provide opportunities to contribute to conservation through authentic, hands-on learning projects.

Students of all grades and skill levels can participate in the following bird-focused Citizen Science programs. These initiatives can easily be integrated into curricula and schoolyards.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

Spring is an excellent time of year for students to get outside the classroom and assess what kind of birds live in their area.  This resource helps students realize the importance of biodiversity. As well, students will count and enter data therefore using Math skills.
