Reducing Global Consumption

Elementary, Middle

Description

This resource focuses attention on the relationship between  human consumption and environmental degradation, with particular attention paid to declining biodiversity.

Students first become familiar with  a number of concepts including consumption, resource depletion, ecological footprint, biodiversity and sustainability.  They then determine their individual ecological footprints with the help of on an on-line  calculator.   After discussing their results with a partner students answer a set of reflection questions and  complete a handout  to assess their understanding of the key concepts.

Students can access the footprint calculator from Zero footprint Youth.
