A project of LSF
The video describes the important role played by the Boreal Forest in mitigating climate change. Students learn how forests act as carbon sinks by storing large amounts of carbon and how clearcutting and other forestry practices prevent their ability to perform this vital function. The Boreal Forest alone stores more carbon than the total amount that would be released from burning all of the oil in the earth’s fossil fuel reserves. So the message is that while it is important to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere, it is equally important to keep the forest's carbon stores locked up.
This video supports those courses that examine the ecosystem concept, climate change, and forestry as well as themes of sustainability, stewardship and conservation.
