A project of LSF
The Protect Nature Challenge encourages Canadians to take everyday actions that help protect biodiversity and nature. It is part of the Government of Canada’s broader Nature Legacy initiative, which aims to conserve more land and ocean areas and create healthier habitats for species at risk by 2030.
The website provides a list of 31 simple and easy to complete actions or challenges that schools can take part in to protect nature. Students can choose one or more challenges to complete individually or as a class, record their actions, and share their results with others. These activities encourage students to take personal responsibility, care for the environment, and engage with their community.
The actions focus on practical environmental actions such as:
The resource provides suggestions and additional links to help implement these challenges. Teachers are encouraged to select the challenges that best suit the needs and interests of their students. Students are invited to share what they are doing to conserve nature on social media by using the hashtag #ProtectNature
Teachers can integrate the challenges as action projects or extension activities in units on biodiversity, ecosystems, or environmental stewardship. The challenges encourage hands-on learning and real-world engagement such as building wildlife habitats or reducing food waste. Students can document their observations or reflections in a journal. The challenges are flexible and can be easily adapted for different grade levels.
