In this activity, students will familiarize themselves with the living and the non-living things in nature.
The class will listen to a read aloud of seasonal story and then anticipate what they may encounter on their nature walk. The class will go outside with magnifying glasses and a partner to explore and look for things that remind them of the story read in class. Upon returning to the classroom, the students will discuss what they saw and share their favorite part of the nature walk. Next they will illustrate their favorite part and caption the drawing. The drawings will be assembled into a class book to be read aloud and taken home to share with families.

Nature Walk is an excellent introductory outdoor activity to conduct with early elementary students. The students would benefit from repeated visits throughout the year completing the Nature Walk activity each time in order to observe the changes that occur. The activity is open ended enough that teachers can choose their own book for the read aloud or use one of the suggested books in the resource.
