What Do Living Things Build?

Elementary

Description

Bees build hives, beavers build lodges, and birds build nests... Could you do it too? Test your nest-building skills! You'll learn a lot as you create a strong and stable resting place for your feathered friends.

Students explore natural structures through outdoor exploration, videos, and activities. They then build and test a replica of a natural structure of their choice using everyday materials,

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This activity supports the teaching of science outcomes related to biodiversity, interactions in nature, and animal life cycles. One of the strengths of this lesson is its use of an inquiry process that helps develop scientific experimentation skills. Through outdoor observation, a class could create a list of birds that nest around the school and share this information on a community website. As part of an outdoor science experiment, students could also place different types of materials, such as animal hair, in a local green space and observe which materials are preferred by nesting birds.
