My Climate Story

A toolkit for working through the meaning of climate change with courage and compassion

Elementary, Middle

Description

My Climate Story is an optional supplementary toolkit that can be used alongside the Plants, People & Climate Change resource or as a stand-alone resource. Through storytelling, reflection, and hands-on activities, it helps students connect their understanding of climate change with their emotions and personal actions. The resource offers tools for teaching climate science in a way that makes space for emotions such as anxiety, fear and uncertainty.

Students explore the relationships between people, plants, habitats, soil, food systems, and climate change while reflecting on what matters to them, their health, and their communities. The eight lessons guide students from building connections with nature and exploring climate emotions to examining solutions, inspiring hope, and taking meaningful climate action through storytelling.

Lessons 1-3 focus on habitats, plants, and us, with activities that help set the stage for student climate stories.

Lessons 4-5 cover climate change and plant adaptation, and activities support students to explore deep feelings.

Lessons 6-7 connect climate to soil and food systems solutions, with a focus on storytellers making a difference.

Lesson 8 is all about solutions and action, with activities and projects to show how climate stories can inspire others.

The activities are designed to complement the Plants, People and Climate Change resource by bringing science and storytelling together. They encourage students to reflect on their own lives, explore what matters most to them, and consider the connections between climate change, their health, and their communities.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The toolkit is a flexible resource that can be used alongside the Plants, People & Climate Change resource or as a standalone learning tool. It is best suited for students in Grades 3–6, although many activities can be adapted for younger or older learners. The toolkit supports cross-curricular learning and can be integrated into science, health, and language arts.
