Leaf Magic

Elementary

Description

In this fall activity, children adopt a tree and observe it throughout September and October. The goal is to deepen students' awareness of individual trees and encourage a greater understanding and appreciation of their local environment.

Students will:

  • observe their tree for changes during the month of September, measuring, observing, noting the changes
  • in October, choose a leaf a day from their tree to illustrate leaf colour and record the date. Students note the changes.
  • create a colour timeline to show how the colours have changed.
  • conduct an experiment to discover which colours are hiding in the leaves.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The easy to implement outdoor learning activity is appropriate for primary students with connections  to science and visual arts. To further the learning in the older grades, students could be encouraged to detail their observations, drawings, recording method, use of graphs, etc.  Research all the different types of trees in the schoolyard and make a list of all the trees and leaves that they can identify.
