Exploring Waste

Why is there no waste in nature?

Elementary

Description

Exploring Waste allows students to explore the concept of waste by thinking, feeling and connecting to waste through reflection questions, three activities and one challenge.

In the first activity, the students will participate in a guessing game called "How long until it's gone?". This is a paper and pencil exercise with follow up discussion questions.

The second activity engages the students to think about where garbage goes once it is collected and to research the answer.

The third and final activity is for the students to create their own compost with the help of handouts and a website.  The students will observe and record their observations on a handout provided.

The final activity involves challenging the students to be Waste Warriors with actions that will make a difference in their community.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This concise resource would fit very nicely into the elementary classroom with its ties to waster and caring for the environment.  It would be an excellent resource to implement around Waste Reduction Week in mid-October with its emphasis on waste reduction, composting and becoming a Waste Warrior.
