With this activity, the students will learn about sustainability and creating less waste via discussions, videos and a hands-on activity.
The activity begins with a class discussion about waste, resources and sustainability. After the discussion the students can watch a video that answers the question, "What is sustainable development?".
In the second part of the activity, the students are introduced to the idea of repurposing used items for other uses. Once again, there are videos to help gain an understanding of the activity. The students will take old t-shirts and with a few simple cuts and tying of knots, they will create a Tee Tote Bag.
Afterwards, the students will estimate the impact the creation of the tote bag will have and discuss how this action helps towards Goal #13 Climate Action.
This activity would be an excellent addition to a lesson on waste reduction for "Waste Reduction Week" that occurs in mid-October. It could also be used to introduce the concept of sustainability to students as part of a Science class.
