This resource provides fun and interactive activities to help students understand the importance of keeping our land and oceans healthy and clean. The resource is divided into two main activities.
Activity One: Blue Carbon - will help students understand what happens to carbon when it is absorbed and stored by our ocean’s ecosystems. This will be done by playing an interactive game.
Activity Two: Climate Change Olympics - students participate in a series of activities that will encourage them to make connections between climate change and their daily lives. The activities include reflection with an art mural, running games with relays, and individual connections with a climate change scavenger hunt.
These activities will encourage students to understand and recognize the effects of climate change in their surroundings and share with them more environmentally friendly options that benefit our climate.
A focus of this activity is developing leadership skills that will hopefully encourage students to use environmentally friendly options in their future.
This fun and interactive activity would be well served as an Earth Day introduction or could be easy-to-implement as an introduction to habitat functions and climate change effects. Also, it could support themes such as population dynamics and human impact on the environment. Supports grade 4 to 7 science outcomes.
