Carbon In Your Community Forest

Secondary, Middle

Description

Students investigate the important mitigation role trees and forests play in combating climate change. They will:

  • measure trees and estimate the amount of carbon stored by each one.
  • identify the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere from their everyday actions.
  • calculate the number of trees required to capture the carbon produced by specific activities.

An accompanying video broadens the discussion to include additional ecological benefits of urban forests.

General Assessment

Strengths

  • A meaningful outdoor experience to support climate change education
  • Easy to implement
  • Instructions for teachers and students are clear
  • Student field work is very well supported for successful completion
  • Learning is made relative to the students' own experience

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This valuable outdoor learning experience extends learning about climate change beyond the classroom and into the community.  It will be of particular interest to science and geography teachers.
