In this activity students will learn about the features and systems that help invasive species be successful in new environments.
In the format of a scavenger hunt, they will scour an outdoor area in search of plants that fit characteristics provided on the 'Amazing Adaptations Hunt sheet'. During the activity students will also be directed to note three things they observed, two things they wonder about and one interesting thing to draw. Upon completing the activity, the class will discuss their findings as they relate to adaptations of invasive species.
This activity includes a number of extensions and additional resources and is part of the larger lesson "The Invasive Big League and the Away Team Advantage".
The Amazing Adaptations Hunt fits nicely with Science outcomes in grades 4 to 7 dealing with living things, habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity. It could be used after the students have had some exposure to the topic of invasive species and their adaptations in order to gain the maximum benefit from the time outdoors.
