Exploring Habitats

Why is being in nature so good for us?

Elementary

Description

Exploring Habitats allows the students to explore the concept of nature and its benefits by thinking, feeling and connecting to nature through a series of reflection questions and four hands-on activities.

  1. What are the Sounds of Nature? - students will explore the concept of nature by observing and recording all of the nature sounds they hear during a 10 minute period
  2. Connecting the seasons - students will write about a favourite memory from each of the four seasons. As a follow-up the students choose their favourite season and explain their choice
  3. Writing to Nature - students write a letter to nature and describe all of the things they observe
  4. Become a Nature Photographer - students participate in mindful nature photography

Each activity provides links to worksheets that are complete with explanations and examples.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This concise resource would fit very nicely into the elementary classroom with its ties to habitats and appreciation of the natural world.  It would be an excellent resource to implement around Earth Day in mid-April as the included activities develop an understanding and appreciation of nature.
