Elementary

Description

Adri the young “rockfish” swims through the ocean on a journey of discovery.  He is astounded by all the different fish shapes, sizes and colours.  When Adri happily describes his travels to his parents he learns that diversity makes the ocean exciting and fun while realizing that each fish is special in their own way.  The bright and cheerful “rockfish” that swim across the pages of this amusing book convey an important message to young readers about the value of an inclusive world where love and acceptance always triumph over intolerance and injustice.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This book offers an excellent starting point for classroom discussions about cultural diversity and individuality.  On the authors website there are free activity sheets on which students can record what makes them special and unique.  These sheets could become the basis of a brown paper “graffiti wall” where the entire school is involved in writing down messages of acceptance.

A class could also organize a music festival with community members of different ethnicities providing the entertainment.  The project could be extended by working with older students to create and post a video of the event which includes a message about music as a universal language that can bridge cultural differences.
