Why the Ocean Matters

Secondary

Description

Covering 72% of the Earth, the oceans supply half of its oxygen, regulate the climate, and provide much of our food and recreational opportunities. The ocean is our planet's support system and it is in danger. We have lost 90% of the big fish in the sea, coral reefs are disappearing and dead zones are emerging. Twelve percent of the land is protected but less than 2% of the ocean.

The makers of this video argue that we need a revolution if we are to reverse these trends and restore a healthy planet.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

Why the Oceans Matter starts a coversation and invites student investigation into the threats to our oceans. Because both the threats and the consequences are varied, the issue has relevance for several subject areas.

  • Science/Science and Technology/Environmental Science - sustainabilty of ecosystems
  • Geography - marine environments, managing natural resources, human-environmental interaction
  • Social Studies - world/global issues
