Secondary, Middle

Description

This resource examines water's importance as a vital substance with particular attention paid to its role in the lives of the Inuit People.  Students explore TEK and present knowledge in the six activities described below to learn about water.

1.  Students recognize that water is vital to the survival of Inuit.  They create a concept map showing that water has a close connection to every aspect of life.

2.  The second activity focuses on Inuit dependence on rivers to hunt caribou.  Students learn how to read a river to avoid danger and then relate this to their everyday lives.

3.  Students write a letter to an imaginary editor describing the effects of hydroelectric dams on river systems.

4.  The physical and chemical properties of water are demonstrated.

5.  Students use topographic maps to describe watersheds.

6.  Students balance individual needs with watershed quality as they develop an imaginary waterfront plot.
