The video aims to make two essential points. First. the global well is threatened. While the amount of water in the well has remained constant, the claim is that water is increasing to meet the demands of the growth in agriculture, industry and population and the quality of the water is deteriorating due to pollution. This trend suggests a future scenario in which nations will face severe water shortages and many cities will dry up.
The second point is that we need a plan to meet the challenges outlined. Such a plan requires the involvement of stakeholders such as industry, agriculture, and governments, but it is individuals and communities that must start the process by saying stop. We will not accept what is happening to the global well.
Water: The Drop of Life is best used an an introduction to a study of water related issues. It serves to outline the challenges involved in meeting the world's demand for water and in starting a discussion about how we might respond to those challenges. A viewing of the video might be followed by organizing students to explore in greater depth the issues raised by the video such as the relationship between water and industry, water and agriculture, water and world population growth, and water and health. R4R includes many resources that would support this effort.
Student investigation may then move on to an exploration of what a plan for water might look like and who must do what. It should conclude with a discussion of what the student can do to affect the needed change.
The video may be used in those curriculum units that focus on resource management in general or water management in particular.
