- Chart paper and markers
- Handful of pieces of candy
- Various trash items that can be reused in a different way (examples: plastic bags, paper bags, Styrofoam cup, fabric scraps, paper scraps, butter/sour cream containers, egg cartons, tires, pictures vegetable/fruit scraps (compost), milk/juice cartons, old socks, etc.)
- Paulson, Rachael Peterpaul, Sir Johnny’s Recycling Adventure
- chart paper for brainstorming session
- any object that has the three arrow recycling symbol on it
- a notebook or paper made from recycled paper
- classroom recycle box
- learners journals with at least four pages (one for each of the “Four R’s”: reduce, reuse, recycle, respect) with room to both write and draw
- plastic grocery bags to collect trash
- scale to measure the weight of garbage collected both in pounds and kilograms
- plastic gloves (In the interest of reducing trash, learners only need one glove for the hand that they will be using to pick up the trash.)
- Blender
- Paper scraps
- Optional items to add to paper (glitter, small dried flowers, threads, etc.)

Description
This unit emphasizes the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling with a particular focus on the significance of respecting the environment and being good stewards of the Earth.
Students will:
- take part in a school yard clean up
- create their own recycled paper
- listen to and read children's literature based on issues being addressed.
General Assessment
Strengths
- Resource is well laid out, easy to follow, and accessible via Internet.
- Cooperative learning strategies are defined for educators.
- Importance of action experiences is presented
- Use of children's literature to introduce new concepts
- Variety of activities to engage student with diverse learning styles
Weaknesses
- A personal affinity with the Earth is not encouraged.
- Students do not take part in authentic action experiences.
- Majority of activities are simulation activities.
To enhance this resource the following changes are strongly recommended:
- Students should take part in authentic action experiences
- Students should be given opportunities to clarify and extend their own values
- Activities should be locally focused and encourage a personal affinity with the Earth
