Textile Mountain

The Hidden Burden of our Fashion Waste

Middle, Secondary

Description

This video explores the cause and effect relationship between second hand clothing waste and the environment.  It depicts in a very sincere form the environmental and social problems that arise when clothing from Europe or North America is sent to countries in Africa.  The focus then shifts from the problem to people and groups who are working to find solutions.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This video would be best suited for the middle school classroom.  It could be used to build awareness around the topics of sustainable production and consumption, human impacts on the environment, climate change and citizenship. Students could be encouraged to look at their own closet and assess their own buying and wearing habits by charting where their clothes come from, how long they have owned a piece and how often they wear it.
