Roots Around The World

A Pedagogical Guide on Urban Gardening

Elementary

Description

Roots around the World raises students’ awareness concerning urbanization and the problems facing cities in the developing world. Using urban agriculture as the vehicle for studying global issues, students "spread their roots around the world" in an effort to understand their interconnectedness with all living and non-living things.  Through learning about the production and consumption of food in urban areas, the students discover that simple daily actions have a large impact on people’s health, their communities and the environment.

Through the activities and practical projects, students will:

  • be introduced to urban agriculture and other options within the global food system
  • understand where food comes from, the method used to grow the food, the impacts of importing food, and the waste generated by importation
  • learn about the nutritional and environmental benefits of growing food locally
  • become familiar with recipes and meals from different cultures
  • bring together different members of the community for a shared meal
  • understand the food cycle and ways to reduce and reuse our waste
  • start seeds and use them for the benefit of the community

The resource suggests practical, community-based projects which further reinforce connections between the students, the school and the community. These include making a class recipe book, organizing a community feast, starting an indoor worm compost bin or an outdoor compost bin and a community garden project in the schoolyard.
