Pollen Collection: Who's in Your Schoolyard?

Description

In this outdoor activity, students take on the role of crime scene investigators. Following basic forensic procedures, pollen samples are collected from the schoolyard and examined under the microscope. In addition to data collection and analysis, students practice various laboratory skills including slide making, staining and using a compound microscope.

Prior to their investigation, students are provided with basic information about plant anatomy and reproduction as well as the relationship between pollen structure and allergic reaction.
