Once Upon a Tide

Elementary

Description

In this magical fairy tale, a strange spell has been cast upon the world causing everyone to forget about the importance of our oceans.  Only one young girl can still hear the sounds of the sea and as she embarks on a voyage of discovery through the mysterious underwater world she realizes that she has to break the spell.  The child must be the one to speak out and help people understand that all life on Earth depends on these remarkable marine environments.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This video has a set of associated lesson plans on the website that are designed to develop students understanding of the value of ocean ecosystems.  The lessons support science and social studies outcomes focused on the environment and sustainability.  The video would also be a valuable addition to a unit that is exploring food chains and ecological relationships in oceans.

This video provides an ideal introduction to classroom citizenship projects centred on World Oceans Day.  Students could conduct a local beach clean up or organize a school-wide reusable water bottle campaign.   A class could also work with a local grocery store to promote the use of cloth bags over plastic.
