A project of LSF
Part of the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Mission Biodiversity – Engage Youth in Conservation Action! this resource engages students in exploring the importance of fish and the impacts of overfishing on biodiversity. Through brainstorming, a hands-on fishing simulation, and an investigation of sustainable seafood choices, students examine how fishing practices and technology affect fish populations and aquatic ecosystems. The activities encourage critical thinking about responsible resource use and actions that support biodiversity conservation.
Students will:
The resource is supported by videos, discussion questions and external links to help students explore the importance of biodiversity and identify actions they can take to support sustainable fishing practices.
This resource provides a logical progression from understanding the importance of fish to examining fishing practices and exploring sustainable choices. The resource offers an accessible introduction to biodiversity conservation, incorporates hands-on learning, and encourages students to connect environmental knowledge with personal action. To extend learning, students could research a Canadian fishery, investigate the impacts of overfishing, and develop an action plan or awareness campaign to promote sustainable fishing and biodiversity conservation. The resource connects to science curricula for Grades 5–8 and would be particularly relevant for World Fisheries Day in November.
