Back to Nature: Invasive Species

From "Into Nature" A Guide to Teaching in Nearby Nature

Elementary, Middle

Description

This outdoor activity takes a look at the impacts of humans introducing invasive species such as dandelions into local environments. The lesson involves creating and examining study plots. Students will organize and draw their own conclusions from the data they collect to determine the presence and prevalence of any invasives. Opportunities are provided to discuss  benefits and problems as well as any actions that might be taken in an effort to manage invasive species.

The resource includes a detailed description of how to conduct the lesson, guiding questions, curriculum connections, materials needed, a “Teacher Background Information” box , step-by-step instructions for lesson delivery, and guidance on assessment and evaluation.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This outdoor activity can be incorporated with Science curriculum units that focus on the study of ecosystems (gr. 7) and biodiversity (gr. 6).  The extension activities suggested encourage learning that is locally-focused and made relevant to the lives of the learners.
