Description
- In this resource students learn about some of the social, economic and ecological contributions of native plants. Attention to the relationship aboriginal groups have had with native plants is included.
- students conduct research into invasive species and report their findings in poster format.
- students also create and conduct a survey of plants and animals in their schoolyard.
- in a culminating activity, students plant native plants and devise an instructional tour of the schoolyard for other students and/or members of the community.
General Assessment
Strengths
- The plant audit utilizes an interesting co-creative pedagogical approach for strategy selection.
- The resource includes reference to some useful websites.
- The resource has solid ESD intent and many good ideas that the classroom teacher can expand on.
Weaknesses
- Some of the components require further development.
- Some of the learning objectives are too imprecise for the age group.
To enhance this resource the following changes are strongly recommended:
- Activity A-1 must be developed into a cohesive lesson. Right now it just provides information through case studies.
- Activity A-2 needs to establish a reason for kids to care and allow them to explore their own knowledge and values. The lesson would benefit from a more balanced approach. Native plants can also out compete each other. Procreation is everything to a plant!
- Activity A-3 should explore more fully the benefits of biodiversity in ecosystems. Having students focus on particular species seems counter intuitive. One suggestion is to take them to an intact forest to notice the interplay of different plants and insects so that they can move from that big picture to the more specific during the plant audit.
- Activity B-1 needs to offer some tools for potential garden builders. This might include considerations such as: How can the teacher and student approach the school administration with the idea? Why is it important to ensure all students and teachers know about the plan? How can you work with district grounds keepers?
