Description
As a class, students examine the 1992 Rio Declaration. After being provided with a copy of The Children's Appeal to World Leaders, they break into smaller groups to express what they think about a specific point within the appeal. Groups create posters and present their understanding to their classmates. As a culminating activity, posters are arranged in gallery style within the classroom to serve as reminders of the themes discussed.
General Assessment
Strengths
- The lesson could be used in conjunction with many subjects of study and requires very few materials.
- The lesson is simple and very adaptable. For instance, if you are studying a specific country, children could analyze the Declaration from the point of view of a child in living in that part of the world and compare the most presses concerns to their own.
Weaknesses
- The lesson's learning objectives are not necessarily supported by the lesson. Teachers need to consider this and make adjustments to the lesson dependant on what they want their students to learn and accomplish.
To enhance this resource the following changes would be beneficial:
- Provide a note taking framework to students that will help them to consider their chosen point through multiple systems.
- Ensure students are not left coping with feelings of hopelessness. In an accompanying lesson look at the good work that is going on around the world by people concerned with these issues and end by generate ideas, perhaps back in their groups, for how the students themselves can live the changes that address their concerns.
