Climate Change Webquest

Elementary, Middle

Description

This resource asks students to create an environmental campaign that promotes public awareness of the climate change issues affecting national parks and historic sites in Northern Manitoba. The message must also relay how the public can help stop the effects of climate change in these areas. The final product could be a TV/radio commercial, video production, website/blog, newspaper article or advertisement, poster or a catchy song. Climate Change Webquest does not focus on the science of climate change, but on the environmental, social and economic consequences of human activity and consumption. The campaign is to address three questions- What is Going on?, Why should we care?, and What can we do? A brief description of what the students will do is found below.

Groups of students follow a five step process, beginning with a research assignment on the role that climate change has played in accelerating erosion at the York Factory Historical Site, and on the threat that rising temperatures have had on the polar bear population in Waspuk National Park.

After brainstorming ideas, and planning/assigning tasks, the campaign idea is presented to the class and feedback gathered via surveys, quizzes, and games.

Actions are documented in student campaign journals and a final report is written.
