This resource features three interactive games through which young students explore the issue of declining biodiversity. Each game introduces a different endangered species and requires students to investigate and solve the problems that have caused the decline in numbers.
The games are supported by an Educator’s Corner that offers teachers lesson extension ideas, background information and supplementary web resources. The resource also provides a glossary and a ‘set’ of index cards written for younger children that provide interesting facts on a range of endangered species.
The on-line story about the Loggerhead turtle is especially well done. The students will find the interactive games interesting and engaging. The glossary is useful and the reading level of the index cards is appropriate for most students.
Some of the websites links to supplementary and support material found in the educator's corner are not available. The educator's corner has lots of ideas for teachers but very few 'ready-to-use' resources. Teachers will have to spend a great deal of time preparing materials. Assessment tools and strategies are absent. Ideas for student action are outlined briefly as a supplement to the core activities. Some of the website material is written at an adult reading level and not very student friendly. While this resource is recommended for students from a very young age to older children, the variety of activities does not address this wide range of ages or abilities.
The resource should provide checklists and rubrics for assessment. An action plan the students can work on should be included as part of the core activities. Offer suggestions for adaptations for students with learning problems.
Making the educator's corner more teacher friendly would enhance this resource. Updating the websites and repairing broken links would be beneficial. The resource could integrate music, art and drama and provide suggestions for showcasing what students have learned.
