Description

This unit is a useful review of the social and economic impacts of Big Box stores, and  of Walmart (by name!).

Students will:

  • in small groups (3-4) analyse product costs for CD players made in the USA versus those made in China
  • do background web research for role-playing a mock Town Hall Meeting to decide whether or not to allow a Big Box store to set up shop in their community
  • create a media campaign for an environmental issue

It should be noted that the the unit  does not mention C02, marine and air pollution impacts of sourcing goods from China and shipping them around the world, displacing local products, or used products with shorter travel-to-market C02 costs.
