These 3 classroom activities are part of the Earth on Your Plate Teaching Kit that explores issues related to local food.

Where Does Our Food Come From?

This classroom resource is designed to increase student awareness of where their food comes from and the impact that shipping food has on the environment.

Students will:

  • list the breakfast foods that they generally consume and their place of origin.
  • create a class map that depicts where locally-consumed food originates.

One Potato, Two Potato

Through a study of the potato industry from crop to consumption that includes a look at the many products derived from potatoes, students are made aware of the various components of food production.

Students will:

  • conduct research to determine the journey from start to finish of a particular potato product and the people that were involved in the journey.

Inspectors, On Your Marks!

This lesson is designed to create  a greater awareness of the impact of our food consumption habits on health and the environment.

Students will:

  • analyze the contents of their own lunch boxes and those of others to determine the health effects for themselves and the environment.
