Active Citizenship: Student Action Projects

Elementary, Middle

Description

  • This resource provides a five step process for completing student action projects. The first two steps, pre-planning a project and introducing the idea to students, are crucial to getting any project off to a good start.
  • The remaining four steps, clarifying the problem, agreeing on a sound solution, planning an effective course of action and implementing and evaluating the action - are student centred. These steps are the heart of the approach to social action and are designed to assist students in making thoughtful, realistic decisions.

The foundation for all decisions made are based on the following tools:

  • Background knowledge
  • Criteria for judgement
  • Critical thinking vocabulary
  • Thinking strategies
  • Habits of Mind
  • This resource provides detailed instructions/guidelines for each of the steps - including questions to ask one's self during each step, introduction of ideas for the teacher to make the project a success, and background information on critical thinking, consensus building, and other new ideas.
  • The last section of the resource, Support Materials, includes black-line masters, case studies, an introduction to active citizenship, and an introduction to critical thinking.

This is a user-friendly resource for teachers and students.
