Awareness of multiple social, economic and environmental factors to control and lessen infection during an epidemic.
What important, related ideas/issues are not addressed in this resource?	Apply resilience thinking to health care. According to Morrisson and Waltner-Toews (2010), "a resilient health care system must constantly evolve and self-organize in order to deal with emerging situations that arise from both social and ecological domains. It must identify and react to surprises, as well as evaluate its ongoing responses to changes - all while maintaining essential services... The ability to self-organize in response to emerging health concerns [or crises] is a key feature of the resilient health care paradigm."
What important ideas are implied by the resource, but not taught explicitly?	H1N1 and SARS make us recognize that public health is a global concern and we need institutions to deal with the various dimensions of global epidemics. Epidemics require that (public) health institutions be reorganized to involve people with different kinds of expertise. "Resilient health care [during epidemic crises] is rooted in expanded peer groups, social-ecological complexity and negotiated outcomes" (Morrison and Waltner-Toews, 2010). "Redundancy in overlapping [public health] governance systems can decrease the likelihood that bad ideas and practices will bring a system into crisis and ensures a wide variety of decision makers agree on the best course of action during an [epidemic] crisis" (Morrisson and Waltner-Toes, 2010).
To enhance this resource the following changes would be beneficial:	Designing and hanging posters in schools to inform and educate about H1N1 is presented only as a secondary alternative activity. It is the only suggested action experience and should be given more emphasis. Also, the systematic and comprehensive research that is suggested should be shared with public health departments and the media. Students should be given opportunities to clarify their values or prioritize their concerns around H1N1 (i.e. economic impacts, concerns about freedom to choose vaccination). A personal affinity with the Earth could be developed by relating maladaptive human practices and their impact on microbiological organisms, viral mutations, infections and various epidemics.

Experiential Learning	Mediocre	Students act as advisors in various public health areas. Students have the possibility of conducting a mock talk show. However, the option to hang educational posters in public places i.e. schools, libraries community centre or health clinic qualifies as an authentic experience. This opportunity needs to be emphasized.
